Upon entering the property you are greeted by a timeless water feature, a highlight of the understatedly elegant yet eye-catching elevation. A stone-clad feature wall is the central spine to the home, visually connecting the indoors to the outdoors while drawing the eye to the spectacular integrated pool. Keen entertainers, the client requested a spacious open-plan living, dining and kitchen area to accommodate large gatherings. This area with its stackable doors opening up to the pool, gardens and alfresco zone further enhance the calming connectivity to water. This family home provides a tranquil place for reflection on many levels.

Spread over three levels on a waterfront site, this iconic Watermans Bay home has a sweeping ocean vista from almost every room, with a special bedroom wing for the clients’ grandchildren to stay. An interiors palette of oak floorboards and Bernini stone floors link the interiors to the coastline while opulent wallpapers, waterfall marble benchtops and statement light fittings give the home a resplendency befitting of its world-class location. An undercroft garage for eight cars, wine cellar, gym, lift, cinema room, parents retreat and lounge with private bar are amongst other luxury inclusions.
The tone of this residence is immediately set by the elevation; with its strong architecture teamed with the home’s soft, sweeping curves hinting that what lies beyond is unique. A 3.8m high door opens onto the homes centrepiece spiral staircase overlooking a mature Manchurian Pear tree in the central 3-level atrium.
When showing the Urbane Projects team ideas for their home, the clients presented images of strong architecture, requesting almost brutalist external lines contrasted with soft interiors. This was achieved with custom-made cabinetry, expanses of marble, timber and opulent finishes.
Named Ottone, Italian for brass, for its brass accents throughout, the home features contemporary luxe styling and living and sleeping quarters designed to be true retreats. Interior spaces were designed for the family’s love of entertaining with strong links to the outdoors and the Swan River views, and the gardens feature carefully considered landscaping to complement the interiors.
This circa 1920’s cottage home has been transformed with a contemporary addition comprising of kitchen, living area, gym and alfresco. The extension also includes as a master suite and undercroft garage carefully designed to mirror the original architecture. The design approach sought to extend the existing bedroom zone and open up a new modern living and entertaining wing to the rear yard, filled with the northern sunlight to animate and expand the volume of the spaces. Its monochromatic colour palette has been paired with the use of natural materials to provide a backdrop of pattern and texture. The complex construction involved underpinning the existing home in order to excavate a 3-car garage, whilst incorporating features into the extension that both mirror and contrast the original. This blend of complex civil works, traditional build methods and contemporary design melds to create this unique family home.

This three-level family home is spacious and airy with every space designed to be multifunctional to suit different purposes as time goes on. Entertaining options are endless, with a paradise of a pool and alfresco area that features a spa, fully equipped bar and alfresco kitchen against backdrops of landscaped gardens while upstairs an open-plan living area captures sparkling river and city views.
The clients design brief called for an interesting, contemporary elevation, with numerous living areas, scope for separation and privacy and a central entertaining area as well as plenty of space for their three boys to play. The individual layout features three pods that wrap around a central pool and deck area, creating a beautiful-indoor outdoor connection. The pod design gives the boys their own wing while the main suite is in a private wing of its own, a hotel-like retreat behind a huge timber and glass pivot door.
The interiors are warm, inviting and contemporary with clean lines complemented by a warm palette of timeless finishes including travertine, jarrah and stone. Numerous living areas offer inviting places for a family to come together, with their favourite the alfresco and pool area with an outdoor kitchen and fireplace. The alfresco overlooks the pool, where a wall above the water feature comes into its own as an outdoor cinema screen in the evenings.

With the convenience of a small shopping centre across the road and the beachfront cafés over the hill, the backyard of their corner block in Cottesloe had long been earmarked as a downsizing opportunity by this baby-boomer couple. The small site has a wide north-facing frontage and architect Paul Burnham responded to their brief with a unique design for a coastal home with a 60’s vibe.
The minimalist exterior features the long, elegant lines of white rendered balconies, an off-form concrete carport and vertical ironbark cladding. Extensive use of full-height sliding doors allows the winter sun to fill the home with light, as well as, providing the connection with the street and the beach atmosphere the owners enjoy. Efficient climate control was also a priority and was achieved with its passive solar design, cross-ventilation, underfloor heating and double-glazing throughout. The interior features large-format limestone floor tiles, recycled Oregon bench tops and a striking bespoke gas fire and canopy. The owners’ extensive art collection dominates the crisp white walls and casual, comfortable furniture completes the stylish, but laidback ambiance.

This stunning location was home to a 1980s house that had good bones but was dated, dark and plain. This once plain home has been given a complete transformation by Urbane Projects. They have created a beautiful, modern home unrecognisable from its former self. The original floor plan was completely reworked and new living and entertaining areas were created. The open-plan living completely opens up to a haven of alfresco entertaining options with a fire pit, BBQ dining, alfresco dining and lounging, all set against an uninterrupted backdrop of river views.

A warm, inviting family home was created for this family who surprised everyone (including themselves!) with the announcement of baby #4 during the build! With some quick adjustments to the upper floor plan to accommodate the new baby, the result is a home with plenty of space and separation for its family of six, despite a narrow frontage of just 9m. The owner´s creative, quirky design aesthetic was showcased in this home with interesting design features and a neutral palette against which their colourful, eclectic décor pops. Stackable doors open the house up to the garden while a central atrium floods the centre with natural light.
The owners asked Urbane Projects to design a modern family home with spacious, oversized rooms, high ceilings and a floor plan perfect for entertaining on any scale. The result is a home that exudes elegance whilst having a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. This home was awarded finalist in the 2013 HIA – The Laminex Group for Kitchen Designer of the Year.
Full height, commercial grade sliding doors connect every living area to the central, main alfresco complete with lap pool, BBQ and fully equipped alfresco that are protected from the constant winds blowing across the river by the U shape design of the home. The stackable doors create numerous indoor-outdoor zones for effortless entertaining or closed to create protected pockets for more intimate entertaining in windy weather. This extensive use of glass also works to visually connect each zone of the home to its riverside locale.
The challenges of an extremely awkward site were all overcome to result in this spectacular modern beach home. Urbane Projects designed a three-level home with a basement level encompassing a garage, a home cinema and a wine cellar. The clients work from home and to the entry level a light-filled home office was cleverly design to give privacy yet still capture the ocean views. Upstairs the family love to come together in the open-plan living with balcony, where they entertain to a backdrop of sunsets and ocean views. Bamboo floors, white walls and a contemporary white stone kitchen create a look that is light, open and inviting. The elevation continues the warm palette, linking the home to its coastal location.
The clients loved the travertine blade wall that flows from the inside-out to both levels of the home. “This feature has received lots of compliments, and other houses in our area have since copied this look.” they said. The clients enjoyed the build process. “We were looking for someone who would work with us on our home build, with a degree of flexibility in the design process.” they said. “We had a great relationship with Steve and it was very much a collaborative process during the design and building stage. He was very open to ideas and flexible in his approach.”
